The Food Analysis Training Course, held in partnership with Universiti Putra Malaysia from 5 to 8 August 2025 in Putrajaya, brought together 30 participants from universities, government agencies, and the food and agriculture industry. Eight experts from Japan and Singapore shared their expertise, combining lectures with practical training on functional substance analysis using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to detect lutein in green spinach, red spinach, batik spinach and moringa.
The programme covered a range of topics, including the Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS), development of functional foods, food labelling systems, JAS testing methods, ISO/IEC 17025, and functional substance analysis. These sessions enhanced participants’ technical skills, deepened their understanding of food analysis, and provided valuable insights applicable to both professional practice and research.
This initiative forms part of Japan’s commitment to strengthening food quality and safety across the ASEAN region, working in close partnership with ASEAN and UPM. By sharing its expertise in food analysis and agricultural standards, Japan aims to address Malaysia’s economic growth, rising food imports, and increasingly diverse consumer demands, all within a broader strategy to ensure a stable, high-quality food supply.
The Government of Malaysia, through the AWGATE Focal Point and UPM, expressed its appreciation for Japan’s strong support in delivering this course. The training has equipped participants with valuable, practical skills and insights that will enhance their technical capabilities, contribute to their professional and research endeavours, and support their long-term career development. Beyond the technical aspects, the programme has also laid the foundation for lasting professional networks and friendships that will extend well beyond the scope of the course.
